THE SHIP THAT WAS UNSINKABLE

The R.M.S. Titanic was built in Belfast in 1912.She was the largest and most luxurious ship built at the time. She measured 269metres by 28metres and was meant to be unsinkable.

On April 10th , 1912 , the R.M.S.Titanic set sail from Southampton to New York carrying 891 crew and 1317passangers.

The captain was Edward John Smith. He was a very experienced sailor from other White Star Line ships.

The ship carried some of the richest people. She carried some of the poor people too.
On the fourth day ,with the ship nearing Newfoundland, Canada the waters turned icy. Suddenly at 11:40pm, April 14th the ship crashed into an iceberg and a made a hole on the side. Less than three hours later she dropped to the bottom of the sea. Only 705 people survived out of 2000.

The problem was that the lifeboat space only fitted half the passengers and crew. She was only capable of saving four water tight compartments. Probably, the biggest reason for the loss of lives was that the Titanic was built 40years before wide spread of radar.
