The Titanic

The Titanic was a huge ship. It was very special because they thought that the ship was unsinkable . The Titanic was built in Belfast , in 1912. She measured 269 metres by 28 metres. On April 10 the Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York carrying 891 crew and 1317 passengers. The Titanic carried rich people and poor people. The captain of the ship was Edward John Smith. He was a very experienced sailor. For the first three days she sailed through calm waters, however on the fourth day she was near Canada and the waters turned icy. At 11: 40 pm on April 14 the ship saw an iceberg. Captain Smith tried to steer away from the iceberg but the ship scraped the side of the iceberg and made a massive hole.

The water flooded into five compartments on the bottom floor, hours later the Titanic plunged to the bottom of the sea.

Only 705 people survived from over 2000.

Dr Robert Ballard found the Titanic in 1985 in the Atlantic Ocean. On his last visit he left a plaque and asked explorers to leave their grave undisturbed.
