What will be in your stocking this year? |
There
are 13 Jolasveinars in Iceland.
Each one has a different name.
See if you can pronounce their names:
Stekkjarstaur, Giljagaur, Stufur, Thvorusleikir, Pottaskefill, Askasleikir,
Hurdarskellir, Skyrgamur, Bjugnakraekir, Gluggagaegir, Gattathefur, Ketkrokur
and Kertasnikir. |
|
Jolasveinars
are different from the Father Christmas we know because they do
naughty things like slamming doors. They are sometimes called ‘Christmas
boys because of the mischief they do. |
|
The
13 Jolasveinars each arrive on a different day, beginning 12 Dec. until Christmas Day. Each one
does their best to cause minor havoc on
Christmas preparations. |
|
Each
Jolasveinar is naughty in different ways.
What naughty things do you think these Jolasveinar do?
Candle Beggar, Meat Hooker and Door Slammer
Candle Beggar snatches
candles.
Meat Hooker tries to run off with the roast
Door Slammer awakens sleepers by slamming doors.

December
23rd is St. Thorlakur’s Day named after Iceland’s major native Saint,
Thorlakur Thorhallsson. There is a tradition in Iceland to eat the
fish named skate on this day. |
|
In
Iceland they open their presents around the Christmas tree on Christmas
Eve. |
|
The
traditional Christmas dinner is smoked lamb. |
|
The
last day of Christmas is celebrated on 6th of January and is called "Threttandinn". Bonfires are lit and they have fireworks. |
Dear Father Christmas,
I am going to give Rudolf a carrot.
Mummy has some brandy for you and a mince pie.
I am being very, very good.
I am sooooooooo excited!
Because you will visit my house soon!
