Symbols of England, Wales, Scotland

What would you say the symbol of your country is? Each country in Britain has symbols of its own but also there are symbols that represent Britain and the UK too. It is not always easy to identify the difference between what should be a English symbol and what is classed as a British symbol.

Does Big Ben and the Tower of London represent England, Britain or the UK? Both are ‘British’ landmarks and are often shown in American films to indicate that the movie is set in England (or do I mean Britain?). Big Ben is part of the building of the UK government and so can be said to be a symbol Britain and the UK. The Tower of London, on the other hand, is in England and therefore an English symbol rather than a British one.

Can you think of symbol of England, Scotland, Wales or Britain?

Queen’s Birthday

Today is Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday. The official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II is marked each year by a military parade and march-past, known as Trooping the Colour (Carrying of the Flag).

Each June, the Queen and other members of the Royal Family attend the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall in London. The Queen attends the ceremony to take the salute from thousands of guardsmen who parade the Colour (their regiment’s flag).
