Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, in the Southeast Asian region of the Asian continent.
For 140 years (1819-1959), the Union flag, the UK’s flag, flew over Singapore. Then, on 3 December 1959, the National Flag, an important symbol of independence, was unveiled On 2 August 1824, Singapore officially became a British colony. One hundred and forty ones years later, on 9 August 1965, it gained sovereignty, Yusof bin Ishak was sworn in as President, and Lee Kuan Yew became the first prime minister of the Republic of Singapore.
