Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, in the Southeast Asian region of the Asian continent.

For 140 years (1819-1959), the Union flag, the UK’s flag, flew over Singapore. Then, on 3 December 1959, the National Flag, an important symbol of independence, was unveiled

On 2 August 1824, Singapore officially became a British colony. One hundred and forty ones years later, on 9 August 1965, it gained sovereignty, Yusof bin Ishak was sworn in as President, and Lee Kuan Yew became the first prime minister of the Republic of Singapore.

The English name of Singapore is derived from the Malay name Singapura (Sanskrit सिंहपुर "Lion City")
