Whip-Dog Day was a Yorkshire custom which took place on this day. The custom is said to have originated when a dog swallowed the consecrated wafer during a service in York Minster.

In past times it was the job of Dog-Whippers to keep stray dogs out of churches.

St Luke’s day is celebrated on 18 October

Luke was a Greek-speaking Syrian doctor who lived in the Greek city of Antioch in Ancient Syri. He wrote two books of the Bible: a Gospel and The Acts of the Apostles; together they make up just over one-quarter of the New Testament. He became the patron saint of painters, physicians, surgeons, notaries and cuckolds.
