Happy St George’s Day

Today, 23 April, is England’s national day. It is an ordinary day – no day off, no firework celebrations etc. However, some people will wear a red rose, the national flower of England.

Google celebrated St George’s Day with a combined Shakespeare/St George graphic on the UK search engine page.

How are you celebrating St George’s Day?

  4. Wonderful, just come across it will pass to my grandchildren. Was reading about St George and of course as it happens, today is St George’ s Day. I knew he was also the patron saint of Greece but did not realize just how many more countries and cities had St George as their patron saint.from Wikipedia:St. George is the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Pomorie, Qormi, Lod and Moscow,

  7. I would like to congratulate you on this fabulous page, and for ensuring your children know about St George’s Day, more schools could benefit from following suit. I am a College Lecturer and I willing to bet most of my students have never heard of it.

Well, done. I lived in Canada for a while and July 1 is Canada Day a national holiday, I was in Ottawa for it last year, it was a great day! They also celebrate over here in Trafalgar Sq, but sadly the English do not seem to care about it, or take pride in our country.

  15. Maybe St George’s day isn’t celebrated by the English because we feel that we are not allowed to be proud of being English in case of being labelled a racist. England is not England anymore!

  20. It is such a wonderful day, because, you know, George was just so English. But really, it's fine to have him as our patron saint. i rememeber celebrating it at primary school, a lot (each year). Good website, helps with my school's 'Thought for the Day'.
Thanks, and have a lovely day when it comes, and anyone else's day when it comes if he is not your patron saint. 😉

  21. I want to celebrate St. George's Day at our school. I am an American teaching at a British School, but they have no plans to celebrate. Ideas? By the way, the school is in the Middle East – very near Cappadoccia (birthplace of the saint himself!)

  33. I'm giving my children English Muffins (sort of like crumpets) for breakfast this morning. We are wearing small English flag pins and because we are Orthodox Christians, we are singing a special prayer (troparian) to St. George this morning. Wish I had roses in my garden, though!

  35. Love the site. More people should celebrate St Georges day and stop with the St Patricks stuff unless you're Irish. Why don't we have a national holiday for this? It's ludicrous. Every other nation has national pride! Why not us?

I am proud to be half English and I love our history and traditions. I work in a restaurant in Plymouth and I put a huge English flag in the window. Every customer loved it, but they all remarked how unpatriotic the majority of our people are. Why don't we celebrate our past more often, we have a fabulous history and England should be proud of it.

  37. Although I am not British or English, I think this legend of St. George is very… awesome I hsould say. I wish America celebrates this awesome national holiday as well, my class and I often go back in our textbook and reread the story of this famous legend,St. Geroge and the Dragon
