What is Project Britain?
Project Britain is a website designed especially for you – schoolchildren aged 8 to 14. Think of it as your friendly guide to everything British. Our aim is to make learning about Britain fun, interesting, and easy to understand. We cover many different topics, from ancient castles and famous kings and queens to modern-day holidays and school life. You’ll find simple, factual information that helps you understand what makes Britain, Britain!
This website is a trusted resource for students, teachers, and anyone curious about the United Kingdom. We focus on providing clear, accurate, and age-appropriate content that supports your learning journey, whether for homework, a school project, or just for fun exploration.
Who is Mandy Barrow?
My name is Mandy Barrow, and I am the person who created Project Britain. For many years, I was a teacher, helping children just like you learn new and exciting things every day. I loved teaching about history and geography, and especially about my home country, Britain. I realised that there wasn’t one easy place for children to find all the answers to their questions about Britain, especially if they were living far away or were new to the country. So, I decided to build this website!
I put all my knowledge and passion for British culture and history into Project Britain. My goal was to create a reliable and friendly resource where you could explore and learn at your own pace. Every page on this website has been written by me, with careful thought to make sure the information is accurate and easy for you to understand.
It’s important to me that the information you find here is correct and helpful. I always try to explain things clearly, using words that make sense to young learners, without making things too complicated. Think of me as your personal guide to all things British!
Why Was Project Britain Created?
I created Project Britain for a few important reasons:
- To help children around the world learn about Britain’s rich history and culture.
- To support students who are studying Britain for school projects or homework.
- To provide clear and simple answers to common questions about British life, traditions, and famous landmarks.
- To share my love for Britain with a wider audience and inspire young minds to explore and learn.
I wanted to make learning about Britain accessible to everyone, no matter where they are. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that children from many different countries are using Project Britain to discover more about our island nation!
What Will You Discover Here?

A few comments from visitors:
"I am and American citizen and astounded by your wonderful website! It is not only informative but kept so up to date that I constantly refer to it, especially the calendar. The pupils of your school are indeed lucky and the site reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and students. I hope the site continues for many years." Charles, USA, Atlanta
"I was searching the web yesterday for a website that would give me a calendar of significant days and weeks throughout the year. I was really struggling until I came across your website and was instantly blown away. I know you have already received lots of praise for your efforts but your site is the most impressive schools website I have seen. Often the amount of time and effort put into creating such a resource is not matched by its usefulness. Your calendars in particular are second to none. Thank you and well done." David, Deputy Headteacher
"EXCELLENT information of the customs and traditions of Great Britain........some of which are in danger of being lost or forgotten forever. THANKS for such an interesting site! " Karen
"As a childminder I like to celebrate festivals and awareness days with the little ones. This was the best and most comprehensive list I found on the net."
, England
"Information about awareness days and special dates to help me plan my youth work programme."
Sue, North Yorkshire, England
"I am British but now living in the US. I needed to know when Mothers' Day is in the UK. (In the USA it is always in May. In 2007 it is on May 13 this year. I didn't want my mother to think I had forgotten her - in March! Now she'll get two cards - one in March and one in May but she deserves to be applauded twice!"
Naomi, Washington DC, USA
"Thank you for all the information i have found relating to feasts and festivals as a teacher it has given me an insite to the history i needed to teach to primary children" Julie, Northampton England
"This is a fantastic website. I am a headteacher planning this terms assemblies and came accross your site through REonline. It is full of useful well presented information. I can use a lot of it in my assemblies and I will be recommending that my staff use it with children. We are an infant school but the way you present the information is so accessible that I feel we could use it. Thank you."
Marie, Shrewsbury, England.
