Hello everyone! Welcome to our page all about airports in Britain. Have you ever flown in an aeroplane? Or perhaps you’ve watched planes take off and land? Airports are incredibly busy and exciting places that connect Britain with countries all over the world.
An airport is a special place where aeroplanes land and take off. It’s much more than just a runway! Airports have large buildings called terminals where passengers check in, go through security, wait for their flights, and collect their luggage when they arrive. They are like giant doorways to the sky, allowing millions of people to travel for holidays, school trips, business, and to visit family and friends.
Air travel might seem like a very modern thing, but people in Britain have been flying for a long time! The very first powered flight in Britain happened in 1909. In the early days, flying was very different. Planes were much smaller and slower, and airports were just grassy fields with a few simple sheds.
One of the world’s very first international airports was Croydon Airport in South London. It opened in 1920 and was Britain’s main international airport for many years. Imagine seeing the grand old planes of the 1920s and 1930s taking off from there! It was a place of excitement and adventure, connecting Britain to places like Paris and even further afield. During World War II, Croydon Airport played an important role, but eventually, as planes got bigger and faster, a new, larger airport was needed.
Today, Britain is home to some of the busiest and most important airports in the world. These airports are vital for our country, bringing in tourists, helping businesses trade, and allowing people to explore new places.
London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the biggest and busiest airport in the UK, and one of the busiest in the world! It’s located to the west of London and serves destinations all over the globe. Millions of passengers pass through Heathrow every year, making it a huge hub for international travel.
London Gatwick Airport (LGW) is another very busy airport, south of London. It’s often popular for holiday flights and connecting to many European cities, as well as longer-haul destinations.
Manchester Airport (MAN) is the third busiest airport in the UK, serving the north of England. It connects people in the north to many international destinations, making it a crucial gateway for that part of the country.
Other important airports include London Stansted, London Luton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, and Bristol, each playing a key role in connecting their regions to the rest of the world.
When you go to an airport to catch a flight, there are several steps you follow:

Information about my calendars
"I am and American citizen and astounded by your wonderful website! It is not only informative but kept so up to date that I constantly refer to it, especially the calendar. The pupils of your school are indeed lucky and the site reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and students. I hope the site continues for many years." Charles, USA, Atlanta "I was searching the web yesterday for a website that would give me a calendar of significant days and weeks throughout the year. I was really struggling until I came across your website and was instantly blown away. I know you have already received lots of praise for your efforts but your site is the most impressive schools website I have seen. Often the amount of time and effort put into creating such a resource is not matched by its usefulness. Your calendars in particular are second to none. Thank you and well done." David, Deputy Headteacher "EXCELLENT information of the customs and traditions of Great Britain........some of which are in danger of being lost or forgotten forever. THANKS for such an interesting site! " Karen "As a childminder I like to celebrate festivals and awareness days with the little ones. This was the best and most comprehensive list I found on the net." "Information about awareness days and special dates to help me plan my youth work programme." "I am British but now living in the US. I needed to know when Mothers' Day is in the UK. (In the USA it is always in May. In 2007 it is on May 13 this year. I didn't want my mother to think I had forgotten her - in March! Now she'll get two cards - one in March and one in May but she deserves to be applauded twice!" "Thank you for all the information i have found relating to feasts and festivals as a teacher it has given me an insite to the history i needed to teach to primary children" Julie, Northampton England "This is a fantastic website. I am a headteacher planning this terms assemblies and came accross your site through REonline. It is full of useful well presented information. I can use a lot of it in my assemblies and I will be recommending that my staff use it with children. We are an infant school but the way you present the information is so accessible that I feel we could use it. Thank you."
