Welcome to Your “Icvisit”!

Imagine stepping into a giant hangar, filled with incredible flying machines that tell amazing stories from history. That’s what an “Icvisit” is all about! We’re talking about a special kind of museum visit, like going to the Imperial War Museum Duxford, where you can get up close to some of the most famous aircraft ever built. It’s a fantastic day out for anyone who loves planes, history, or just wants to discover something new about Britain’s past.

These museums are not just about old planes; they are places where you can learn about brave pilots, clever engineers, and how aviation changed the world, especially during times of war and peace. Let’s explore what makes an “Icvisit” so special!

Planes, Planes, and More Planes!

When you go on an “Icvisit” to a place like Duxford, you’ll be amazed by the sheer number and size of the aircraft. You can see everything from early biplanes, which look like giant kites, to mighty bombers and sleek jet fighters. Many of these planes are British, like the famous Spitfire, which helped protect Britain during the Second World War. But you’ll also find aircraft from other countries, including many American planes that helped fight alongside Britain.

Imagine standing next to a huge B-52 bomber, which is as long as a football field! Or seeing a speedy Concorde, which used to fly passengers faster than the speed of sound. You can often walk underneath the wings, peer into cockpits, and really appreciate how big and complex these machines are. It’s very different from just seeing them in a book or on a screen.

Stories from the Skies

Every plane has a story, and these museums are brilliant at telling them. You’ll learn about the First World War, when planes were first used in battles, and how they developed rapidly. Then comes the Second World War, a time when aircraft like the Hurricane and Spitfire became symbols of British courage and determination during the Battle of Britain.

You’ll also discover how technology changed after the wars, leading to the jet age and the Cold War. The exhibits explain not just *what* happened, but *why* it happened and *who* was involved. You can read about the lives of the pilots, ground crew, and even the people on the home front who worked hard to build these incredible machines.

It’s a chance to understand how important aviation has been in shaping modern Britain and its relationships with other countries, especially the United States, which played a huge part in the air campaigns of the Second World War.

Aviation Facts at a Glance

Here are some interesting facts you might learn during your “Icvisit”:

Aircraft Type Key Role Era
Sopwith Camel WWI Fighter Plane 1917-1919
Supermarine Spitfire WWII British Fighter 1938-1961
Avro Lancaster WWII British Bomber 1942-1963
North American P-51 Mustang WWII American Fighter 1942-1984
Concorde Supersonic Passenger Jet 1969-2003

More Than Just a Museum

An “Icvisit” is more than just looking at old planes. It’s an immersive experience. Sometimes, you might even get to see live flying displays where historical aircraft take to the skies! The roar of their engines truly brings history to life. You can also explore hangars that were used during the wars, walk on old runways, and

"I am and American citizen and astounded by your wonderful website! It is not only informative but kept so up to date that I constantly refer to it, especially the calendar. The pupils of your school are indeed lucky and the site reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and students. I hope the site continues for many years." Charles, USA, Atlanta

"I was searching the web yesterday for a website that would give me a calendar of significant days and weeks throughout the year. I was really struggling until I came across your website and was instantly blown away. I know you have already received lots of praise for your efforts but your site is the most impressive schools website I have seen. Often the amount of time and effort put into creating such a resource is not matched by its usefulness. Your calendars in particular are second to none. Thank you and well done." David, Deputy Headteacher

"EXCELLENT information of the customs and traditions of Great Britain........some of which are in danger of being lost or forgotten forever. THANKS for such an interesting site! " Karen

"I am British but now living in the US. I needed to know when Mothers' Day is in the UK. (In the USA it is always in May. In 2007 it is on May 13 this year. I didn't want my mother to think I had forgotten her - in March! Now she'll get two cards - one in March and one in May but she deserves to be applauded twice!"
Naomi, Washington DC, USA

"Thank you for all the information i have found relating to feasts and festivals as a teacher it has given me an insite to the history i needed to teach to primary children" Julie, Northampton England

"This is a fantastic website. I am a headteacher planning this terms assemblies and came accross your site through REonline. It is full of useful well presented information. I can use a lot of it in my assemblies and I will be recommending that my staff use it with children. We are an infant school but the way you present the information is so accessible that I feel we could use it. Thank you."
Marie, Shrewsbury, England.
