Welcome to the World of London Pubs!

Hello everyone! My name is Mandy Barrow, and today we’re going on a journey to discover a very special part of British life: the London Pub. When you think of London, you might imagine red buses, black cabs, or the Queen’s Guard. But pubs are just as much a part of the city’s heart and history.

A pub isn’t just a place where adults go to drink. For hundreds of years, pubs have been important community hubs, places where people meet, chat, eat, and relax. They are often called “the living room of the community” because they are so welcoming and familiar. In London, you’ll find pubs on almost every street corner, each with its own unique story and character.

A Long, Long History

Pubs have been around for a very long time, even before many of the buildings you see in London today were built! Some pubs can trace their history back to Roman times, when travellers needed places to rest and eat. In the Middle Ages, they were known as “alehouses” because ale was a popular drink.

Later, they became “inns,” especially “coaching inns.” These were big places where horse-drawn coaches would stop. Travellers could get a meal, a bed for the night, and fresh horses for their journey. The innkeepers would look after everyone. Many pubs in London today still have signs that hint at their past as coaching inns, with large archways that once led to courtyards where horses were kept.

Over time, these inns evolved into the pubs we know today. They became places for locals to gather, share news, and celebrate. They’ve seen centuries of history unfold, from kings and queens to famous writers and ordinary people enjoying a chat.

What’s in a Name? Pub Names!

One of the most fun things about pubs is their names! Unlike modern shops that often have simple names, pubs have names that tell stories. You’ll find names like “The Red Lion,” “The Black Horse,” “The Swan,” “The King’s Head,” or “The George and Dragon.”

Many names come from history, heraldry (symbols used by knights and royalty), or local landmarks. For example, “The Red Lion” is one of the most common pub names and often refers to the royal coat of arms of James I. “The King’s Head” or “Queen’s Head” refers to the monarch of the time. Animal names like “The Black Horse” or “The White Hart” were often signs for people who couldn’t read, making it easy to spot the pub.

Sometimes, pubs are named after famous local people or events. These names are a wonderful way to learn a little bit about British history and culture just by looking at a sign!

Step inside a pub, and you’ll often find a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There’s usually a long counter called the “bar” where drinks are served.
