Trooping the Colour: The King’s Official Birthday

This grand military parade celebrates the official birthday of the British Monarch, even though their actual birthday might be at a different time of year! The tradition of celebrating the Monarch’s birthday in June began because the weather is usually better for outdoor parades.

The parade involves over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians. Members of the Royal Family, including the King, ride on horseback or in carriages. The highlight is when the King rides down The Mall from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, where he inspects his Household Division troops. After the parade, the Royal Family gathers on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. It’s a truly magnificent display of British pageantry and tradition.

D-Day Anniversary (6th June)

Towards the end of June, the world-famous Wimbledon Championships begin. This is one of the four major Grand Slam tennis tournaments and the only one still played on grass courts. Held at the All England Club in London, Wimbledon is renowned for its strict traditions, including an all-white dress code for players and the consumption of strawberries and cream by spectators.

Watching Wimbledon is a huge part of British summer culture, with people glued to their screens or queuing for tickets. It’s a showcase of top sporting talent and a fantastic example of British tradition mixed with world-class competition. Many famous tennis players have made their names on the hallowed courts of Wimbledon.

Royal Ascot
