St George’s Day 23 April 2006

Last year we spent an enjoyable day joining in the Festival of St George at Covent Garden. We saw a performance of Punch and Judy, Morris Dancing and Pearly Kings and Queens. This year the same event takes place on Saturday 22nd April ( 10.30am – 5.30pm). I wonder why it is not on the 23rd?

The Parade at the Cenotaph is also on Saturday 22 (10.30am – 11.45am)
Short service, wreath laying and march past.

The Shakespeare’s Globe is celebrating Shakespeares birthday with a Roman themed party on Sunday 23rd (10.00am – 4.00pm). St. George was a Roman soldier.

Charlie Chaplin will be celebrated with a series of free film showings in Leicester Square on Sunday 23rd.

More information about the ablove events can be found on the London.gov.uk website.

Yes. London should have St. George’s day celebrations. We should be proud of our “Englishness” and not let the “politically correct” brigade make us feel this is something to be suppressed and feel ashamed of.
The P.C. brigade are having the opposite effect to the one they desire, people are becoming much more patriotic.

Thank God for St. George and England!

You would think St Georges Day was a disease the way some people go on. What is wronge with being proud of your country and expressing this in a celebration. why should we not proudly wave our flag. There are many celebrations taking place in Great Briton yet the most important one “St Georges Day” is ignored.

Despite this government pretending that we are a free democracy, in England the majority, we English are ruled by a minority mainly made up of immigrants who are supposed to have come to our country because they like our way of life and ancient traditions, but are terribly offended if we state that the country they belong to is England,we are actually English and proud. This attitude is endorsed by our mayor, Red Ken Livingstone who refuses to finance a proper day of celebration for St George’s day yet can find £100,000 for St Patrick’s day. That is why I support an English Parliamentfor the people living in England who love the country.

I agree London and the rest of England should be doing more to celebrate this date.
Ken Livingston is getting paid enough, how about he backs something so we can feel proud to be English. After all not many of us are left in London.
Thank God my children belong to Scouts. We will be out marching the streets and having a service to mark this day.

I am a Welsh woman living in England. In Wales we are proud to celebrate our patron saint’s day and no-one bats an eyelid! The same should be true of St. George’s Day – as my son (English by birth) says, “for England and St. George!”

The reason for not celebrating St Georges Day is that we have more non white than Genuine WHITE English people who would like to celebrat St George day. But there is to much P.C. in this Land of ours.
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN & ST GEORGE

I am English and am not offended by other countries when they celebrate their National Day!! Why should we be stopped from celebrating ours?!

Any why do people fuss over St. Patrick’s Day so much?!!

It says so much of the sad state of our society. I mean they’re teaching citizenship in schools but discourage students from ‘flaunting’ their Nationality and their culture.

Big up St. George!

I agree we should celebrate St Georges Day, this is England and we should not forget it. So why when we decorate our cars with St Georges flags are we accused of being racist. I feel the reason it is not being celebrated is because of the amount of different religions in this country, and the government is afraid of upsetting the balance, how ridiculous can they be, we are the outsiders in our own country. Lets celebrate why we can.

Big.H born on St George’s day 1947.and proud of it. I have allways celebrated St Georges day.
it’s been said we should not celebrate this day. People from other countries celebrate their saints day, here in England, we even help them celebrate. I have been drunk many time’s on St Pat’s day. It should be a national holiday, don’t know why its took so long.Have a great day.

I don’t think we should have St. George celebrations. Darwin Day I agree with I mean what did St. George do? Slay a Dragon?! I think we need a day for the BRITISH people to be patriotic, but I don’t think that it should be on St. George’s day. For one he is a Saint which brings in the religous side of things which I think the British people should step away from. Darwin gave a huge advancement to sceince and I think this should be celebrated as a national day instead.

I am an American who relocated to the U.K. just shy of 20 months ago, and I’m delighted to be in England. I came here because I value the English way of life. It saddens me greatly to see it under attack from within–non-English people demanding accommodation–and without–the country into which I was born infecting England with shoddy American popular culture. I say, For England and St. George: Let the parade begin! There is so much to be proud of!

The politically correct gang should lighten up, let us have our St. George’s Day and be proud. Ken Livingston our so called mayor should make this day an annual holiday so that we can celebrate, just like others are aloud without blinking an eye

My partner and myself tried in vain to find St George’s Day events to go to in our town this year. Despite looking in the local paper and going to the town centre in the early afternoon, there seemed to be nothing except for 2 pubs with banners up.We were disappointed. We live in Hastings, rich in history in other respects, sadly lacking in this.

we wore our red roses with pride on st georges day .we were waiting for the parade to come down the kings road,it is arranged every year by our uncle who lives in merton they go to trafalger square and through london down the kings road back to merton.we where informed that the police refused to let people on the lorries,so they hired open top buses, the police said no everyone would be arrested if the got on the transport. they refused to give up and had a short walk just through merton.we are not allowed to celebrate being english it is a crying shame. we need to start celebrating our culture.

I have lived in Canada for 40years, but have never stopped being soooo proud to be English. Canada is a great country and there are so many countrys worse of, but now is so p.c prayers are nolonger said at the begining ofthe school day , Christmas cards are getting somewhat hard to find wishing you a Merry Christmas etc.
We do not celebrate St. Geogres Day, however it is mentions on a few radio channels and on some t.v news programs.
I feel so proud this month while during FIFA so many cars are flying the English flag, in fact allthough growing up in England I never watched football at all, prefered rugby, I went out and bought my own flag & fly it very proudly, my daughter who has never been to the U.K. {yet}also flys one.
Keep the flag flying and stand up for your rights & traditons while you can

St George Unofficial Bank Holiday said…

I thought you may be interested in a campaign we are organising to encourage people to take the day off work on St Georges Day next year.

We want the government to introduce a bank holiday on 23 April. They have refused in the past because they believe there is insufficient support. If a sizeable number of us take the day off work it will send a powerful message to those in charge.

If they won’t give us a bank holiday, we will organise our own.

I’m sure you appreciate that a bank holiday on St. George’s Day will be a great opportunity for all the English, regardless of colour or religion, to recognise the things that bind us together – rather than concentrating on our differences.

Everything from cricket to curry could be celebrated on our national day.

Please go to www.stgeorgesholiday.com and join thousands of others who have pledged to take the day off work on Monday 23 April 2007.
