“Hello,
I wonder about the following: At the moment, there are two Princesses of York: Beatrice and Eugenie. Now, if somebody, let’s call him John Smith, marries Princess Beatrice, what would his style presumably be? I’m somewhat doubtful whether he would be called Prince John of York after the marriage… Second question: If some years later Eugenie gets married as well, say, to a Harry Miller, what would his new title be? I guess, it wouldn’t be the same as the one of “JohnSmith”…
Thanks for your answers
Michael”
We are not sure of the answer to this question. We know that a Queen’s husband is not know as a King and so assume the same applies to a Princess ( if a Princess marries, her husband is not known as a Prince).

When Princess Anne got married to Mark Phillips, she kept her Princess title but he stayed plain Captain (his rank in the army) Phillips. There was some talk at the time (in 1973) that the Queen had offered him a title but he decided to turn it down. Prince Anne and Captain Phillips also turned down titles for their children, Peter and Zara, as they wanted them to grow up in a normal family.
Prince Philip is a prince in his own right, as a member of the Greek Royal Family, and has the British title of Duke of Edinburgh.
Beatrice and Eugenie, when married, will be in the same position as Princess Anne (now the Princess Royal).
Quite agree with previous comment. Additionally when Princess Anne married her present husband he kept his naval rank.
Incidentally when Princess Anne and Capt Phillips were offered the titles for themselves (rather than their children) when they married. Had they have accepted the titles then any children would have been called a Viscount (boy) Lady (girl). The fact the Princess declined also removed any potential title for future children and there a ability to receive monies through the Civil list
It is correct that a man, such as John Smith, would not take on the title of his wife, however, if a woman marries a man, she takes on his title. confusing a bit, i know. but its the way it is.
the correct title for a british princess after marriage:ie is HRH Princess Beatrice Mrs J. Smith. In scandanavia they loose automatically the HRH but retain their birth tile of princess. They can if they so choose upon marriage to relinquish their titles as Lady Patricia Ramsay did
